Sea Point’s award-winning coffee spot is now a bakery too

TikTok-worthy cube croissants, crookies & cruffins

Last updated: Thursday, 10 July 2025

One of Cape Town’s best coffee shops (mischu has been voted the Best Coffee in Cape Town three years in a row) has its own French pastry consultant and a bakery display packed with crookies, flaky cruffins, flatbreads and sourdough. If you get there early enough, because doors open at 6:45am and people across the city flood in for their morning coffee, you can grab the viral cube-shaped croissant.

CROOKIES, CUBE CROISSANTS, CRUFFINS

The cube-shaped croissants come in all sorts of flavours like pistachio (the bestseller), raspberry, and chocolate and hazelnut.

The bakery inside mischu officially opened in April 2025. You’ll still find the familiar space Capetonians know and love: Huge windows overlooking Regent Road, round tables for a catch-up and two-seaters ideal for a quick coffee meeting.

FRENCH PASTRIES IN SEA POINT

French pastry consultant Serena Obadia leads the bakery at mischu.  She doesn’t just design the menu, she also trains the staff. “Many of our team have never baked before. Now they’re proud to say they can make sourdough from scratch,” says owner of mischu Mikhael Bou Rjeily.

Mikhael is Lebanese, a culture which has roots in both Middle Eastern and French culinary traditions. “There are so many bakeries in Lebanon with huge towers of baklavas and pastries and breads. That's what I grew up eating almost every day.”

The bakery not only has French confectionaries; it also has flatbreads and halva brownies (a Middle Eastern sweet made with tahini, sugar and spices).

AWARD-WINNING COFFEE

If you know mischu, you know their coffee. It’s what built the brand. They’ve won multiple accolades over the years, including Best Cappuccino in South Africa, Best Espresso and Best Cappuciono in Cape Town, and the title of Best Coffee in Cape Town, not once but three years in a row.

Their in-house Isabella blend is a smooth, 100% Arabica coffee from Brazil, Guatemala, and Costa Rica, with a mild, pleasant acidity and a dark chocolate and roasted hazelnut aftertaste.

This blend, and the Middle Eastern-inspired breakfasts and lunches, are what keep regulars coming back to mischu coffee shop in Sea Point.

GET THERE EARLY TO NAB A PASTRY

Doors open at 6.45am. It’s busiest between 7am and 11am, so get there early enough to still get a cube croissant before they sell out. You’ll see families grabbing breakfast together, runners ordering their coffee to go, and remote workers getting a productive start to the day.

Parking can sometimes be tricky because mischu is on Regent Road. If you can’t find street parking, try Piazza Da Luz (where the Kwikspar is) for paid parking nearby. It’s close enough to stroll over and usually has a few bays open.

The feeling you get from mischu hasn’t changed. It’s still warm, welcoming and very much part of the Sea Point community. Only now, there’s a whole new reason to love it.

There’s typically a calm mid-morning lull from 11am to 2pm after the early rush. Image: mischu
