Sotano is a restaurant with an excellent Mediterranean-inspired menu, loads of food options to share, and a relaxed vibe. It’s the kind of place where friends and dogs are welcome – well, the dogs must remain in the open-air section. No-one ever complains, though, because that’s also the best place to chill on a Sunday afternoon, watch the sunset over the sea, and listen to the Rivertones play famous reggae covers.
The Rivertones are slick and one of Cape Town’s most popular reggae cover bands. Image: @Sotano
The Rivertones is Cape Town’s most well-known reggae band (did you know that singer Roland Nair has even played live with the Wailers in Cape Town and was asked to tour with them?). So you’ll be listening to the tried-and-tested real deal when the group of four plays classics, such as One Love and No Woman No Cry and other crowd favourites, like UB40’s Red Red Wine. It’s a four-hour set, from 4pm to 7pm.
The Rivertones lead singer is Roland Nair, who has been performing since the age of 12. Image: @Sotano
The menu is inspired by the Mediterranean background of the owners, so you’ll find dishes such as Spanish paella, Mouilles Mariniere, and fish of the day (the menu has recently been refreshed so expect lots of seafood, like octopus, this season).
The wine list is substantial and very good, and you can get 85% of the wines by the glass (try the refreshing and affordable house white with the chicken liver paté with a tomato-and-anchovy relish. Also, keep an eye out for specials such as the 2-for-1 lamb burger with tzatziki, hummus and crispy onion rings.
The menu is varied, the drinks refreshing, and what’s great is that dogs are welcome. Image: @Sotano
The Rivertones play: Sundays, 4am to 7pm
