Tuesdays Are Pancake Days At Tjing Tjing
A fluffy soufflé pancake (or two) at Torii at Tjing Tjing House
Served hot and steamy, with a knob of butter and maple syrup, and maybe a dollop of ice cream. That’s how you’ll get your pancakes every Tuesday until 3pm at Torii, on the ground floor of Tjing Tjing House on Longmarket Street.
A TASTE OF TOKYO IN CAPE TOWN
The casual, cosy, street-food-inspired space that you step into on the ground floor of Tjing Tjing House is called Torii. You’ll feel like you’re in bustling Tokyo, even more so when you taste the food on offer. There’s traditional Japanese breakfast, bento and sando boxes (imagine beautifully crafted lunch boxes), tempura temaki (hand-rolled sushi), steamed hirata buns, yakitori (skewered meat), gyoza (dumplings), ramen and rice bowls.
On the sweet side, things get playful. Pancake Tuesdays aside, on every other day (and Tuesdays too, if you have space) you can pick from a selection of mochi (a chewy dessert made of sweet rice flour) and Japanese cheesecake.
Of course, there’s also sake and Japanese beer to wash things down with.
HOW TO GET YOUR PANCAKE FIX
Torii is funky and informal and they don’t take reservations, so get yourself there with plenty of time to soak up the vibe – and the pancakes, which are served until 3pm on Tuesdays. Torii is open from 10am until late.
