Treat yourself by investing in diamonds (or Tanzanite)

Gorgeous gems to complement your mood and your budget

“I buy my own diamond, and I buy my own rings,” sang Destiny’s Child in Independent Women 20 years ago. More and more, women are buying themselves and each other fine jewellery.

It’s not retail therapy. It’s a smart way to celebrate yourself or the women in your life: The right precious stone or metal can be rewarding because of the symbolism, and they are also a worthy investment. Best of all, at Shimansky, the world-renowned jewellery designer, they can also be affordable.

REWARD YOURSELF WITH A DIAMOND RING

Charlize Theron wore a a 47-carat emerald cut diamond necklace by Shimansky to celebrate her Oscar win for her performance in Monster in 2004.

The gem you buy to celebrate your wins can be just as symbolic, and you get to set the budget. The rings in Shimansky’s iconic Table Mountain Ring Collection, inspired by our famous Cape Town landmark, start at only R1 295. They are available in a variety of styles: from the diamond-encrusted setting in 14K rose, yellow and white gold, with 27 ethical diamonds representing SA’s area code, to a beautifully simple sterling silver band.

If you’re anticipating a series of wins, why not begin a collection of stacking rings? Reimagine Shimansky’s many simple wedding-bands, My Girl rings, engagement- or eternity-ring options into a stack of gorgeous “reward” rings, one for every significant achievement. There are no rules, remember, and Shimansky consultants (mostly women, in fact) will certainly encourage you to do it your way and in your own time.

BE YOUR OWN TRUE NORTH (OR SOMEONE ELSE’S)

Shimansky’s Southern Cross (prices start at around R9 000) or True North (starting at around R19 450) are important guiding symbols, and whether in pendant, ring or earring form make wonderfully meaningful gifts. They’re the kind of gift a loyal friend or mentor could give to symbolise resolve, self-confidence and courage into the future – and it’s a gift you can treat yourself to. Both unique designs can be made up in any number of combinations, using diamonds or Tanzanite, even both together.

GIFT A DIAMOND TO A BESTIE OR DAUGHTER

The My Girl – Shimansky’s exclusive patented diamond cut and the first international one to originate from South Africa – is a gesture of great devotion. It’s often chosen for an engagement ring, but we think we can shift the narrative and be our own girl, or back our own girls. The price for one, set into a simple ring, starts at about R11 000.

OR INVEST IN DIAMONDS OR TANZANITE

Founder Yair Shimansky says a diamond is also special because of how it makes you feel. It also retains value. Tanzanite, in fact, is far more rare than diamonds – there are only 10 years left before the mine in Tanzania runs dry – and so this jewel’s value is bound to rise.

If buying for investment purposes, the classic solitaire is a solid bet, says Jessica Abrahams, consultant at The Shimansky Experience at the Clock Tower, because they will always be in demand. Also, Fancy diamonds in yellow, pink, blue or red, are extremely rare, making excellent investments. Find more investment and design options st Shimansky.
