To commemorate over 30 years of democracy in South Africa we’ve lined up things to do on Freedom Day.
Freedom Day 2026 commemorates over 30 years of democracy in South Africa. We’ve lined up 7+ educational and entertaining things to do on the long weekend, including democracy tours and kids activities, a 6km or 10 km race, heritage tour through Muizenberg, art festival and more.
Long March to Freedom, the one-of-a-kind history exhibition, is curating a day out for families where you get to decide your entry cost. Entry is based on your donation. Expect hourly history tours, a jumping castle, henna tattoos, and wine tastings from up-and-coming black winemakers.
Date: Monday, 27 April; 10.30am to 4pm
Cost: Entry on donation, R120 per person for the wine tasting

That’s the challenge at HintHunt’s newest mission room. It feels like something out of Pac-Man and Jumanji, where every arcade-themed room has a different task. Start the public holiday early with Langa AC running club’s Run4Freedom.There are two race options: a competitive 10km race and a 6km fun run. Both routes run through Langa, featuring historical spots along one of Cape Town’s oldest townships.

Held at The Centre for Creative Education, the Khamissa Art Festival is a one-day celebration of all things art. You can find works like sculptures from Clifford Nooi Nooi, cyanotype art from Paul Stanford and more. Expect live music, a market, food, art exhibitions, and live art making. There’s also workshops like zine making and paint jams.

This walking tour through Muizenberg and Kalk Bay is led by guide Cameron Peters, who has become an authority on unpacking the stories and history behind some of Cape Town’s most fascinating neighbourhoods. The walk starts at The Striped Horse and ends at Olympia Cafe, and along the way you’ll hear about the Battle of Muizenberg, Rhodes's expiration in his Cottage, infamous Randlord speculators, and more.
