African children’s play, free entry to museums, braai competition + more

Last updated: Tuesday, 13 June 2023

Enter a braai competition with the fam (there’s 4x4 rides too), party at an inner-city festival or listen to music and poetry in an art gallery. Or, commemorate with free entry to museums and a documentary film screening. Here’s what you can get up to on Youth Day (and this long weekend).

TAKE THE KIDS TO AFRICAN PLAYS

The Jungle Theatre Company’s latest performance at the Masque Theatre, Makhulu Indlovu, is based on a Kenyan folktale. The play follows a herd of elephants who travel to lay their matriarch's bones to rest, and through this, heal the wounds of the past. This will be followed by When Lion Had Wings, a Khoi folktale about overcoming fear and challenging greed. A ticket includes entrance to both shows and is most suitable for kids 6 to 12 years old.

Date: Saturday, 17 June; 10am - 11.30am
Cost: R60, book via Quicket

Running for Transformation is offering a 5km and 10km road race in Newlands, designed for the whole family. There’ll be food, coffee, kids activities and prizes.

Date: Friday, 16 June; from 8am
Cost: From R50, book via Webtickets

VISIT THIS APPLE FARM FOR SUNDAES

This working apple farm has a country café with tables that look out onto the rolling greenery of the orchards. On Youth Day, Cheverells Farm is serving old-school ice cream sundaes (who remembers knickerbocker glory?) and waffles. The proceeds support Siphila Sonke which provides education, care and outreach to the informal settlement in Elgin. There’s also deliciously fresh farm food on the menu

Date: Friday, 16 June; 8am - 3pm
Cost: Varies

WATCH A (FREE) FILM SCREENING

Youth Capital, an advocacy campaign that focuses on evidence-based solutions to youth unemployment, is debuting its short film Lean on Each Other at the Labia Theatre. The film features seven stories of diverse South Africans and demonstrates the impact of youth unemployment, as well as the viability of social connections as a solution to this crisis.

Date: Friday, 16 June; 10am - 11.30am
Cost: Free, book via Google Form
