Youth Day, celebrated on 16 June, marks the beginning of the Soweto Uprising. Here are 6+ ways to commemorate this: Give a warm meal for the homeless at a Winter Drive, attend an opera, visit Iziko Museums for free and other ways to spend the day.
The Cape Town Jazzathon celebrates its 25th year with an exceptional weekend line-up of festivities at the Grand Arena. Listen to some of the biggest names in Gospel music, including Loyiso Bala, Ernie Smith, Veronica Meyer and many more. With two headline groups: The Jesus Collective and Jonathan Rubain with the Koortjies Band.

Selected Iziko Museums are commemorating Youth Day by allowing free entry. View exhibitions like World of Water, depicting life in our oceans, and African Dinosaurs. Explore the History and culture of South Africa or marvel at the outstanding art collections created and designed by diverse artists from this continent and around the world.

Bring the whole family for an amazing day of kids’ activities, outdoor fun and delicious meals at Living Colour. Participate in mountain-biking or trail-running routes of various distances, from 1km to 13km. There will be an array of food stalls and a stocked bar to replenish yourself afterwards. Every one who finishes will receive a medal, with various prizes for the winners of each route.

Watch “What Youth day means to me,” a play at the FynArts festival in Hermanus. Featuring performers aged between 11-18, from Jere de Bruyn acting academy, showing off their budding talents. The play ends with a musical performance by 10 talented kids from the academy.

Serve a warm, cooked meal to people living on the streets of Cape Town. Give a helping hand at a Winter Youth Drive 2022 and donate clothes to a children’s home in Mfuleni. Contributions of clothes, blankets and food will be appreciated to help those in need during the cold months ahead.

Enjoy an evening of flirting, fun and frivolous scheming on stage with Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, presented in collaboration with Sempre Opera. It will feature a fantastic South African cast, including Conray Scott, Siphamandla Moyake, William Burger and the award-winning Cape Town Opera Chorus.
