Samsa-masjien Play in Cape Town
The thought-provoking piece of local theatre that delves into Kafka’s Metamorphosis
If thought-provoking and complex theatre is your cuppa tea, then enter the complex intricacies of the human mind with this locally produced, award-winning Afrikaans play, Samsa-masjien, which is set to dazzle audiences at the Baxter Theatre from Thursday, 15 to Saturday, 31 January 2015
This acclaimed production delves right into the heart of the human psyche taking inspiration from Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis. In Samsa-masjien, the protagonist, Gregor senior, believes that he is able to see and feel insects around him, and fears that he will be morphing into one. However, his psychiatrist and psychologist believe that he is simply displaying symptoms of the early-onset dementia. As the play progresses, audiences are taken on a journey within Gregor’s psyche and how his metamorphosis takes place within his mind and his surrounds.
For those not in the know, this award-winning play made its debut in 2014 to critical success at the Absa Klein Karoo Festival. Directed by Jaco Bouwer and written by William Anker and starring Gerben Kamper, Ilana Cilliers ,Antoinette Kellerman and Ludwig Binge, this production is set to be one to watch.
