Reasons to visit this beach-side family spot in Onrus
Ramen by the sea, a build-your-own waffle bar & 5 more
Last updated: 3 July 2024
Your kids can make new memories, and you can relive yours, at this brightly-coloured eatery located on Onrus River. Milk on the Beach, with loaded hotdogs, beach toys, and ice-cold beer and sushi, is a nostalgic treat for all ages (even in winter). Here are seven reasons to go.
1. THE VIEW IS STUNNING
Need we say more? Milk on the Beach is located on Onrus Lagoon, a 10 minute drive from Hermanus.
At Milk, you’ll be treated to views of both the sea and the mountains. Image: Milk on the Beach
2. IT’S RIGHT ON THE BEACH
It’s also right by Onrus beach, meaning you can head over to Milk after a beach day with the kids. Or have drinks and watch your kids build sandcastles - Milk has a beach shop selling buckets, spades and pool noodles.

3. WONDERFUL IN WINTER TOO
Milk is worth the day trip in winter too. The deck closes up, and there’s a cosy fireplace and decadent hot chocolate. The view is still stunning on a chilly day with mist over the mountain and lagoon.

4. ONLY PLACE IN ONRUS WITH SUSHI
Milk is the only restaurant in this small town that has sushi, and there’s other fresh seafood dishes like spiced sesame calamari with peppadew may or oysters with spiced apple salsa.

5. SPECIAL WINTER MENU
Ramen, prepared in the traditional style, is a new addition to their winter menu. There’s tonkotsu shoyu (made with pork belly, nori and shitake mushrooms, with a pork bone-based broth) and niwatori miso (chicken and prawn in a miso broth).

6. LOADED HOTDOGS & WAFFLE BAR
Down the stairs from Milk is the Waffle Shack. You can come in with sandy feet and try a loaded “Chihuahua” hotdog smothered in crushed nachos, jalapenos and guacamole, or a poke bowl. Kids can go wild at the build-your-own waffle bar with toppings like Bar One pieces, Jelly Tots and Smarties.

7. BRING YOUR FOUR-LEGGED FRIEND
This beach-side spot is dog-friendly and the restaurant is covered with funky murals of pugs and French bulldogs. At the Waffle Shack, there’s even a Dog Bowl cocktail (for humans only).
