Post-Work Monday Kayak to Revitalise Your Week

Monday has a silver lining – and it’s kayaking. A post-work paddle in the ocean with Kaskazi Kayaks & Adventures will be the rejuvenating highlight of your week

Due to strong prevailing winds in summer, the best times to try a sunset trip are in autumn, winter and spring.

A PRIME TIME FOR KAYAKING
In the late afternoon, you might go in the direction of Clifton to see the sun set over the Twelve Apostles, where light reflects beautifully off the mountain range. Paddling at moonrise around the time of full moon is equally breathtaking. For a sunset paddle, Kaskazi's Tracy Rauch recommends being on the water between 4:30pm and 6pm in winter and between 6pm and 8pm in summer.

WHAT CAN YOU SEE WHEN SUNSET KAYAKING?
There’s a good probability of seeing 70cm-long endemic Heaviside dolphins. “There’s something about the Granger Bay area that the Heaviside dolphins (and their babies in summer) particularly love,” explains Tracy. “The bigger dusky dolphins are fast and acrobatic and sometimes like to surf close to the kayaks.”

In whale season from around June to November, you might see Southern Right whales, who travel to Cape waters to calve. The African penguin, commonly seen at Boulders Beach, surfaces in the Atlantic Seaboard, too.

There’s also wonderment at eye level: Table Mountain, Lion’s Head and Signal Hill and the promenade take on a completely new perspective.

TWO-HOUR PADDLE TO BOOST YOUR WEEK
Kaskazi trips leave from Granger Bay and cost R400 per person for about two hours on a guided tour. Wear comfortable beachwear and a windbreaker if it’s nippy. Have a waterproof camera or a waterproof pouch for your phone, though Kaskazi guides take photos and upload to Facebook within 24 hours. The trip lasts for about two hours – just enough time to make it home for dinner, only this time energised and rejuvenated for the week.
