Makers Landing, a hub for South African food and culture, is hosting its first Seafood Fest. Learn how to make pickled fish, get tips for buying fresh fish at a fish market, try tons of food vendors, watch free demonstrations and discussions and see celeb chef Reuben Riffel in action.
The weekend-long festival, a seafood lover’s delight, is also created for anyone interested in the future of sustainable fishing. Entry is free to the festival at the V&A Waterfront.
The festival is happening Saturday 1 April to Sunday 2 April and was founded with sustainability in mind. Naturally there'll be talks on greener fishing practices and local fishing communities.
The authors of Beyond the Blue - Women of the Sea, which focuses on women from fishing communities in Cape Town, will host a discussion about the sustainable future of fishing and its impact on social development and local communities.
There’s also a series of panel discussions and demonstrations, hosted by Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation, on how foodies, chefs, cooks, and everyday consumers can shift our behaviours to benefit our oceans.

Sustainably-sourced fresh fish, fish and chips, sushi, paella… these are just some of the food vendors to expect at the Seafood Fest.
The whole weekend experience, from 10am till 9pm on Saturday and until 6pm on Sunday, is created to be vibrant, inclusive and accessible, whether you want to try fresh fish, watch cooking demos, hang out and listen to live music or drop off the kids at a cooking class.
See celebrity chef Reuben Riffel give a “fish and dip” demonstration on Saturday, learn how Cape Town music legend Terry Fortune makes pickled fish (just in time for Easter), or how to clean and fillet snoek from fisherwoman Michelle Singh on Sunday.

Parents can try out the different food vendors and attend demos while the kids learn how to make their own fish cake burgers (and will get to bring home the recipe).
The kids’ class is halaal and aimed at young cooks between the ages of five and 10. The best part: It’s a parent-free zone (meaning you have no choice but to browse the market while the kids are safely entertained). You’ll need to book for this.

Makers Landing is situated at the Cape Town Cruise Terminal. To get there, enter Dock Road from Coen Steytler, continue towards the Silo District, at the circle before South Arm Road, turn right into the Cruise Terminal. Tip: There’s parking: Find the map.
