Makers Landing, born to be an incubator for budding chefs, has matured into the go-to hub for locals thirsting for real South African food and culture. They come for the mogodu at Pitso’s Kitchen, Faieez’s koesisters, Spitbraai Sundays and the confectionery creations from Sweet LionHeart. Parents love the enthralling cooking demos for kids. And there’s still the cherry on top: Parking is free for the first 3 hours. Here’s what’s happening over Christmas at Makers Landing.

This festive season, there's cooking classes from 4 - 22 December 2021. Make Flakey Roti with the bubbly Faieez Alexander, founder of Fuzzy Foods, who won “the world’s best koesister” competition on KFM. You get to take your rotis home, plus he’ll make the curry for your salomie.

Attend the Traditional Festive Cooking class led by Nolu Seven Colors Eatery founder Nolukha Dube-Cele, where you’ll learn how to make umfino, chakalaka, and more, just like her granny. Or take the Festive Candy Cane Decorating Evening Workshop by Sweet LionHeart. The price includes everything, from tools and an apron, to a cake, frosting, and bubbles.Decorate a stunning Christmas cake at Sweet LionHeart’s Demo Class. Image: Sweet LionHeart
While food stylist and private chef Amerea Vercueil will teach you how to make better holiday braai sides in her demo classes. The cooking classes are 2 to 3-hour workshops. They cost from R285p/p to R995p/p and you can find and book one on quicket.

If you’re not making the food, settle in for the experience. From gin tastings at Pienaar & Sons, shisanyama at Pitso’s, to koesisters and salomies at Fuzzy’s and braaibroodjies at Mosi Smokehouse.
There’s curries and cane juice at Charm’s Kitchen and Ayurveda in a bowl at Indikaap. Conscious Meat Merchants, who are loved for their ethically-reared and halaal meat, have the Seaside Breakfast menu, and there’s everyone's favourite, the Sunday spitbraais at Ukhamba Beerworx on the rooftop. The festive season is really the perfect opportunity to see why Makers Landing is one of the Cape’s most authentic food and cultural hubs.

Makers Landing is really about a celebration of South African food and culture, and music has become an integral part of that. Richard Ceasar, who has performed with jazz great Jimmy Dlulu will sing the classics; multi-award winning saxophonist Abraham Mennen, and Muneeb will play jazz. Plus there are other live performances on every Saturday and Sunday from 12.30pm to 2.30pm. Genres range from jazz and neo soul, to Afro rhythm and house. All shows are free to watch.

Makers Landing has a reasonable price range, like 4 koesisters for R20 or a full meal and a drink for R120. Plus parking is free for 3 hours (after which you pay R10) at the Cape Town Cruise Terminal Parking, right at the door of Makers Landing.
To get there, enter Dock Rd from Coen Steytler, continue towards the Silo District, at the circle before South Arm Rd, turn right into the Cruise Terminal. Click on the map: here.
