With a long weekend for Youth Day this year, we’ve found free and affordable ways to celebrate. There’s an orchestra show, women’s walk, market in the park, free guided tours, wine tasting festival, fun run and drag concert. Here’s everything you need to know about how Cape Town is spending Youth Weekend.
Across from Canal Walk is an exhibition with 100 life-sized bronze statues, the largest in the world. You can see both large and little known names at Long March to Freedom, from Nelson Mandela to Autshumato. Plus their latest statue of Johnny Clegg. There’ll be free guided tours throughout the weekend. Tours run from 10am to 3pm and start on the hour every hour.

Youth in Transformation is back for another year of their Running for Transformation fun run. Choose between a 5km and 10km, both starting from SACS High School. You can expect food stalls, prizes, race packs and kids activities. Tickets can be bought ahead of time on Saturday between 10am and 1pm and Sunday between 3pm and 5pm.

You can catch violinist Andrey Baranov with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra for their Winter Symphonies production at City Hall this Thursday. He’s known for his expressive depth and brilliance, and will be joined by conductor Thomas Sanderling, who’s making his Cape Town debut.

Curves on Trails is hiking in Newlands Forest this Saturday. They’re a beginner-friendly hiking and walking group for females of all sizes. The route has a 3km loop with slight inclines and scenic stops. The meeting point will be at the Newlands Forest signboard at the top of the entrance road.

Market in the Park is back and they’re celebrating Father’s Day. Expect 80 food and lifestyle stalls, with everything from plants and pet accessories to baked goods and thrift finds. There’s even a play area for kids. It’s good to know pets are welcome and there’s secure parking.

The Pink Pony Club Experience is a glamorous drag tribute to Chappell Roan’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess album, with every track lip-synced and performed live. Think stadium concert meets drag cabaret. You can also stick around for the Chappell-Roan-themed after party (there’ll be Gaga and Lana Del Rey hits too).

The Drink Chenin Festival is all about celebrating South Africa’s beloved Chenin Blanc. There’ll be wine tastings from 25 top producers, live music, and local gourmet food. Your ticket includes a branded glass and all wine tastings. Kids are welcome too.
