Jam Every Other Day: One Woman Show Premiers in Cape Town
A heartwarming memoir of motherhood comes to life onstage
There’s nothing like a story about the triumphs of strength, optimism and determination to make you feel like you, too, can do anything. Author Emmaleen Kriel’s heartfelt, yet quirky, memoir of her experiences as a mother of six is one of those stories. Thanks to F Creations, Jam Every Other Day hits the stage, at the charming Masque Theatre in Muizenberg, from Thursday, 19 to Saturday, 21 October 2017. Be amongst the first to see this play’s world premiere.
Jam Every Other Day tells of the everyday life of Emmaleen and her brood of children – along with a ménage of pet animals too. The mother pens her experience of South Africa in the ‘60s, as the family lived in Constantia and then the Knysna forests. With not much more than, as Emmaleen puts it, “love and good intentions,” the mother raised her children and they made the best of their circumstances, creating an unusual yet happy life for themselves. The memoir is one of two by the local author.
The hour-long play has been a long time in the making; adapting the book for stage has taken nearly three years. Erika Marais stars as the leading lady in the one-woman show, with Celia Musikanth working alongside her as director. Both women have a lot of theatre experience and, like the author of Jam Every Day, are mothers. This may be part of what makes Emmaleen’s book so relatable to them and many other mums.
The Masque Theatre is beloved by the Muizenberg community. The theatre regularly hosts soirees, seminars, musical recitals and film shows. It’s inclusive and open to all. The building is wheelchair friendly and the theatre has a licensed bar that you could pop into for a drink before or after the show.
