On Fridays, The Galileo Open Air Cinema brings the weekend vibe and shows movies at rotating venues in and around Cape Town, all of them gorgeous. Come early and set up your own picnic, or explore the various food and drinks options on offer at the venue, then watch the show as the sun sets in the background.

GET A DIFFERENT MOVIE EXPERIENCE, EVERY TIME

Every Picnic Fridays venue is a different and special experience. Venues include Battery Park at the V&A Waterfront, Central Park in Century City and Meerendal Wine Estate in Durbanville. From box-office hits to family favourites, the Galileo features movies that everyone – family and friends, co-workers or date – will enjoy, so pick the best one for your occasion. To watch a movie outside in the warm summer weather is a special experience.

FIND FOOD AND DRINKS ON SITE

The rotating venues also have food and drinks for sale or you can bring your own picnic. Order from a range including pizza and shawarmas, plus there are drinks, alcoholic and non-, on sale. It goes without say there’s popcorn, as well as hot drinks (note: take cash). 

If you’re looking for a Friday date-night idea, The Galileo Open Air Cinema has introduced a Double Delight Ticket for 2 that includes reserved front-row seating, blankets and backrests, popcorn, smarties and fruit pastilles for two. If Friday doesn't suit you, there are also midweek movies, and Picnic Thursdays and Sundays at Kirstenbosch Gardens.

If you prefer getting the royal treatment, then the Galileo Royale is for you. That happens every first Wednesday of the month.

• For a more exclusive cinema experience, book The Galileo Royale experience, the first Wednesday of every month

• There’s a weekday picnic experience at the Kirstenbosch Gardens on Thursdays and Sundays

• Catch a Saturday movie in different locations in the Cape Winelands 

• The Galileo Open Air Cinema’s rotating Picnic Fridays are Covid-19 compliant, and venues will accommodate a limited number of guests.The Galileo Open Air Cinema also hosts private birthday parties and end-of-year parties

• Family-friendly movies will be shown over the December school holidays

• Remember to bring some cash, as some food and drink vendors do not have card facilities
