Food Truck Valley, Cape Town’s fave halaal outdoor market
Chamoy & tajín pineapple, falooda hwachae and more
Last updated: Thursday, 4 July 2024
Word on the street is that Food Truck Valley is the place to be if you’re looking for crazy viral dishes (that are also pocket-friendly and halaal). Think chamoy and tajín pineapple, falooda hwachae, the craziest steak roti gatsby you’ve ever seen... Here are 10 dishes that are sure to give you the worst case of FOMO (in the best way).

1. PINEAPPLE WITH CHAMOY AND TAJÍN
This internet sensation is served on a stick, with a juicy chunk of pineapple coated in chamoy and sprinkled with tajín. It’s not too sweet, or too salty — perfect if you enjoy fresh fruit but don’t have much of a sweet tooth. You’ll find this at The Juice Factory.

2. FALOODA HWACHAE
This drink combines the best of two cultural classics: Falooda (Cape Malay dessert drink with rose syrup, sweet basil seeds and ice cream) and hwachae (Korean fruit punch made with seasonal fruits). It’s packed with fruit, jellies and what Bobalicious describes as a “touch of tradition”.

3. KOREAN CRISPY CORN DOG
Inspired by the Korean classic, a homemade vienna sausage is coated in batter, rolled in cubed pieces of potato, and dipped in panko breadcrumbs. Krispy Corn Dogs then fries it to perfection, creating a corn dog that is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
There’s also “Half & Half” (half vienna half mozzarella) and “Just Cheese”. Image: Krispy Corn Dogs
4. “THE HOBBIT” MILKSHAKE
The Hobbit is just one of Cophia Coffee’s many gourmet milkshakes. “The Hobbit” is made with caramel, Lotus Biscoff biscuits, and vanilla ice cream. It’s surprisingly light and not overindulgent, and perfect if you love a little bit of ginger in your dessert.

5. CRAZY LONG FRIES
True to their name, the size of these fries at Oh My Frys are a little bit crazy. When you order your fries, you have the option to spice it (with options like chilli salt, Mexican chilli, sour cream and chives, and chilli and lime) and sauce it (BBQ, tomato, garlic mayo, chilli sauce, peri mayo, and more) however you’d like.

6. MA SE MASALA STEAK ROTI GATSBY
With this dish, Halaal Munchies puts a twist on the traditional Cape Town gatsby. Instead of a bun, it’s flaky rotis stuffed with juicy masala steak, slap chips, lettuce, cheese and an assortment of sauces.

7. VIRAL CHOCOLATE CHEESECAKE
This baked cheesecake takes an ordinary dessert and turns it up a notch. The cheesecake base is smothered in a thick layer of creamy milk chocolate, and is served in a bowl (for all that melted chocolate). You’ll find this at the ObsessionCPT truck.
They also have the viral Khanafer and Pistachio bars, which are currently trending all over social media. Image: ObsessionCPT
8. KIMCHI AND BEEF DUMPLINGS
These dumplings are tiny and meant to be eaten in one bite. You get three dumplings per serving and each one is filled with spicy kimchi and beef. Frozen Faves garnishes them with chillies and soy sauce.
You can order these dumplings on the Frozen Faves website too. Image: Tamia Retief
9. “CRAZY BOAT” WAFFLE
The Crazy Boat, from Everyday We Waffling, is just as outrageous as it sounds. This waffle is loaded with ice cream, sprinkles, chocolate, marshmallows, and all the gummies you can imagine. It's a fun, colourful treat that's great for kids or for anyone with a big sweet tooth.

10. FOR BURGER LOVERS - “THE CHARLI”
The Charli is King's Kitchen's signature dish. Two toasted buns are topped with a patty, chilli cheese sauce, pickled jalapenos, and chive mushrooms. This gourmet treat is ideal for the foodie looking to try something a little bit more extra than a regular burger.
