Ever tried a Turkish coffee and Turkish-delight pairing?

Visit this quaint café in Stellenbosch for a one-of-a-kind experience

If you’re a coffee lover, then here’s something special to do over the weekend: Turkspirit Café, set in a beautiful courtyard, brings a slice of Turkey to the heart of Stellenbosch, and it’s only open on weekends. Taste Turkish delicacies, do a coffee and Turkish-delight pairing, or watch how to make coffee in hot sand.

GO FOR A COFFEE PAIRING

In Turkey it’s customary to have a sweet treat, such as Turkish delight or baklava, with coffee. Like the idea? Book a coffee-and-Turkish-delight pairing at Turkspirit Café.

The Turkish coffee is served traditionally, with a glass of water on the side to cleanse your palate, paired with seven flavours of Turkish delight, all vegan-friendly. Try the classic rose flavour and other not-so-common ones like chocolate, almond (one of the most popular), pomegranate, mint, ginger, and orange.

WATCH HOW COFFEE IS MADE IN HOT SAND

The Turkish coffee-making experience is quite unique. One spoon of coffee and sugar (this must be added before boiling) goes into a cezve (a typical, long-handled, copper or brass pot), before one cup of water, at room temperature, is poured in. The cezve is then slowly pushed into hot sand in a sandpit. Watch your coffee boil, and once it starts to rise and foam appears on top, it’s ready.

You’ll also learn about Turkish coffee and its traditions. Did you know Turkish coffee is not filtered? After the coffee has boiled, pour some into your cup, let it settle for a minute or two and then drink. Make sure you don't drink the last bit – it's where the coffee particles settle. Plus, learn about the origins of coffee and more.

TAKE YOUR FAVOURITE TURKISH DELIGHT HOME

You don’t have to wait another week to taste another one of these fluffy delights, the café sells Turkish delight in all sizes and flavours. Or get the entire kit, including Special Blend Freshly Grounded Turkish Coffee, a cezve, and traditional cups and saucers. You can also try other Turkish delicacies here, such as Simit (a circular bread, typically encrusted with sesame seeds), Cigar Pie (pastry rolls stuffed with cheese or mince), or vanilla ice cream with rose syrup.
