You won’t find traditional cheese-and-wine pairings at Black Elephant Vintners, rather something entirely left-field: Every Saturday this eccentric cellar tastes wine to the rousing sounds of rock ‘n roll. Why? Because it believes sound helps heighten the senses, which makes wine tasting even better. Plus, it’s something fun.
Headphones are provided for the tasting experience, which is done silent-disco style. Image: Joana Bronze (@bronzejoana)
“Rebels of the vine” is how Black Elephant Vintners describes itself. The music-and-wine pairing plays with the sense of sound and is held in the tasting room, where the tables are wine barrels and the black walls are painted with colourful murals of iconic rock stars. You can spot Freddie Mercury, ACDC, The Rolling Stones and more.
There is also a fireplace for the cold winter days. Image: Black Elephant Vintners
The tastings are led by two of the owners, Kevin Swart and Jacques Wentzel. Upon arrival, guests get their headphones with classic rock music playing in it. The music stops during wine discussions, but in between you can’t help but boogie.
There are two pairings to choose from: the Cap Classique and Music Experience, which includes 5 glasses of bubbly and runs for 1 hour and 30 minutes; and the longer Black Elephant Experience, during which you taste 10 glasses of wine over 2 hours and 30 minutes.
There is a minimum of 4 and maximum of 20 people per booking. Image: Tasting Cape Town (@tastingct)
Music and wine pairing is available: Saturdays, from 11am
