Elite Level Surf Ski Paddlers Race A Gruelling Event Around Cape Point
Find out if you can qualify to enter, and where you can watch and cheer from.
The Cape Point Challenge was started in 1980 so that lifesavers could test their ocean paddling ability by navigating the waters around Cape Point on surf skis. “A love for the sea, surf ski paddling and taking it (the competition) to the next level has kept these paddlers coming back to test their ability in one of the most iconic surf ski races on the world calendar,” says race director, Peter Cole.
This event happens on Sunday, 15 December, and brings together one of the largest fields of surf ski paddlers, including past and present world champions and top local and international paddlers.
ENTERING THE RACE
The challenge is so gruelling that you need to have competed in (or at least qualified for) one or more of the listed qualifying races such as Durban’s Da'Real Downwind Series or East London’s Pete Marlin Surfski Race. Either that or you need to submit your results for a timed open ocean surf ski race of 25km or more to the race organising committee. To join in the surf ski challenge, you can register online.
The Cape Point Challenge team has an experienced race safety committee and enjoy a partnership with the NSRI. All surf skis are safety-checked and all paddlers have to complete a number of qualifying events to ensure competency.
BEST SPECTATOR SPOTS AND THE FINISH LINE
To show your support, head to the start at Witsands beach in Scarborough or cheer the paddlers on while looking out from Cape Point lighthouse in the Table Mountain National Park. Spectators are welcome to congratulate the paddlers at the finish line of this epic endurance event at Fish Hoek Surf Lifesaving Club. There will be food and drinks on sale and the atmosphere is electric. Free and secure parking is available at Fish Hoek Beach.
