Bucket-List Special: Swim (Safely) With Sharks
Is it your dream to see a great white?
Seeing a great white shark in its own territory, on its own terms, is a once-in-lifetime experience that the lucky few who do it never forget. Now you can tick off that bucket-list item thanks to experts in the shark experiences business White Shark Diving Company (WSDC), based in Gansbaai.
GANSBAAI, GREAT WHITE SHARK CAPITAL
The Gansbaai area, roughly two hours from Cape Town, is known as the great white capital of the world because the sharks are present there year-round. This is thanks to the thousands of Cape Fur Seals – a great white shark’s favourite snack – that live and breed on nearby Dyer Island.
On each boat tour, there are only 22 passengers, which means everyone on board gets to spend more time in the cage and is also guaranteed quality viewing spots from the deck of the boat. Its experienced team of dive-masters and skippers are trained to show clients not only the great whites but also the wide range of other marine life in its natural habitat. It’s a wonderful, personalised experience.
IT’S CERTIFIED RESPONSIBLE TOURISM
WSDC has been operating for over 20 years and has a 100% safety record. It’s also the only GreenLine Responsible Tourism-certified, eco-friendly cage-diving excursion, and has received the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for the last five years.
The company is fully committed to the preservation of great white sharks and the marine environment as a whole, which is reflected in its involvement in and contribution to various conservation and social-responsibility initiatives, as well as through its volunteer programme.
PRICING OF THE WSDC’s KILLER CAGE DIVING SPECIAL
Adult divers will receive a R150 discount and children (aged 12 years and younger, though it’s advised that children five years and younger don’t join) a R50 discount, plus a free WDSC buff when booking a shark-cage diving experience with WSDC. To qualify for the discount, simply mention CapeTownMagazine.com when booking. Normal adults rates are R2050 (R2200 in 2020) and children’s (12 years or younger) rates are R1350 (R1500 in 2020).
NOTE: Transport from Cape Town and Hermanus can be organised at an additional cost; R500 for a round trip. The discount only applies to the shark cage-diving fee and not to the possible additional travel costs.
Tip: Although the great white sharks can be seen throughout the year, South Africa’s winter months – June to August – are the best times to view it.
*If no sharks are spotted on your trip, WSDC will provide you and your party with a voucher for another trip.
