Ever wondered what happened to Mrs Robinson? Now you don’t have to. The 1967 cult classic, The Graduate, which launched Dustin Hoffman to superstardom, is coming to the stage, with a smart, sexy, sassy production at The Masque Theatre in Muizenberg, from 14–30 November. And yes, the play is for mature audiences only, so make sure you book the babysitter!
WHAT’S THE STORY?
The Graduate is a story about looking for love in all the wrong places. In the movie Dustin Hoffman plays Benjamin Braddock - a 21-year-old college graduate, living at home with his parents, trying to avoid the nagging question of what he plans to do with the rest of his life. Things change when he meets Mrs Robinson - a bored housewife and friend of his parents. But what starts out as a fun, sexy affair turns complicated when Benjamin falls for the one woman Mrs Robinson demands he stays away from – her only daughter, Elaine. The story is a classic love triangle that is as relevant today as it was when Hoffman and Bancroft made it a cult classic movie back in 1967. It’s funny, it’s sexy and it’s complicated - what’s not to love?
AWARD-WINNING FILM
The film received multiple nominations at both the Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards. And while it didn’t win any Oscars, it took home a stack of Golden Globes. These included Best Actress for Anne Bancroft, Best Director for Mike Nichols, and a New Star of the Year for both Dustin Hoffman and Katharine Ross for actor and actress respectively. It also won five BAFTAs and is listed in 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die. And yes, the winning combination of Nichols, Hoffman and Banncroft have a lot to do with these awards, but the script and story is something that has stood the test of time and never loses its sparkle.
A THEATRE FOR THE COMMUNITY
The Masque Theatre is a small, community theatre known for its repertoire of fun and exciting productions. It was founded in 1959 to encourage more people to take part in different aspects of the theatre as volunteers. To this day, the venue encourages theatre-lovers to join their community and help with stage management, fundraising, costume design, wardrobe management, and more. You could say it sets the stage for theatre to grow and flourish in the Southern Peninsula.
