Lazy Sundays at Gesellig
Breakfast, brunch or a late lunch
*As of may 2012, Gesellig has closed*
Gesellig is the place to be on Sunday mornings or lazy afternoons. Get an early start with the 7:30am breakfasts while you read their selection of local and international papers or relax on their couches over coffee and a croissant. Choose from their many omelette toppings or try the poached eggs and toast.
Come through later for a long Sunday lunch with friends. One of the owners, Lorenzo van Beek, recommends the meat fondue as a Dutch alternative to the traditional Sunday roast. Go after 4pm for their fondue special – R99 per person (minimum of two people per fondue) will get you bread, six pieces of chicken, six of beef, six of pork and six mince balls which come with three different sauces. Side dishes include a green salad, warm seasonal veggies and fries, mashed potato or rice.
After lunch stick around for coffee and a lazy afternoon of board games or cards. Gesellig has an impressive selection of games to choose from.
‘Gesellig’ means ‘cosy’ in Afrikaans and it lives up to its name making this an ideal spot for a Sunday meal.
Special traditional Dutch four-course menu
Visit Gesellig any day of the week for their traditional Dutch menu. Start with the aardappel soep (Dutch potato leek soup), mains are kip satay or pork satay served with seasonal veggies, mashed potato, fries or rice. And dessert is appelkruimel tart met slagroom (Dutch apple crumble cake with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream). End the meal off with coffee or tea and a traditional Dutch sweet called Haags Hopje. This special four-course dinner is R145 per person.
